Former Everton winger Andros Townsend has signed for Luton Town until January.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace forward left Goodison Park in the summer.

The 32-year-old was close to joining Burnley before they withdrew their offer as they did not want to stifle the development of younger players.

"I never thought I'd pull on the Luton shirt, so it's a huge honour to play again in the Premier League," he said.

"I've seen where I can help this team and on the flipside the manager has seen where I can help - whether that's on the pitch, in the dressing room or on the training field - with my enthusiasm and experience," said Townsend.

Townsend played 13 times for England, earning the last of his caps in 2016.

The Hatters are 17th in the league with one win from their opening eight matches since returning to the top flight.

The winger opened up on his failed summer move to Turf Moor at the end of last month, describing it as "one of the toughest conversations I've had in my career".

"If I was bad and knew I wasn't going to get a contract I could prepare myself. But to be looking at houses, looking at schools, talking about squad numbers and then to be told the contract is no longer on offer, it rocked my world," said Townsend.

"I argued my point, put my case forward. That I offer something different, that I'm comfortable being a squad player and good around the squad even when not playing."
