Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has apologised after tragedy chants were aimed at Liverpool fans during last week's 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road.

Luton have launched an internal investigation and threatened to ban any fans found to have taken part after chants which indirectly referenced the Hillsborough disaster were heard.

"A statement has gone out from the football club and I want to apologise as well," Edwards said. "We don't condone that, of course, and there's an investigation going on at the moment."

In a club statement Luton "wholeheartedly apologised to anyone offended by the chants", adding they are "extremely disappointed".

The FA is "seeking observations" from Luton and "further detail" from Bedfordshire Police.

Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters died as a result of a crush at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield in April 1989.

Speaking on Friday before his side's Premier League match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, Edwards asked Luton supporters to "bring the noise but do it with respect".

"In terms of a message to our supporters, go out tomorrow, we want them to bring the noise - but let's be good and be respectful.

"Sunday is Remembrance Sunday and Sir Bobby Charlton's funeral is on Monday as well, so we go to Old Trafford at an important time."

The Premier League has launched a classroom-based education lesson aimed at helping eradicate negative behaviour such as tragedy changing in stadiums.

Liverpool also offered to work with Luton on education - as they are believed to have done previously with Leeds United, Manchester City and Manchester United.
