MK Dons boss Mike Williamson insists the League Two table is "irrelevant" despite his side climbing to within two points of the play-off places.

Williamson took over in October after a run of eight league games without a win which cost Graham Alexander his job.

He lost his first game in charge but they are unbeaten in six since then and have moved up from 16th to 11th.

The Dons beat Forest Green 2-0 on Saturday and he said: "We had to show different sides of our character."

Williamson told 大象传媒 Three Counties Radio: "The football we played was, in patches, really pleasing. You could see what we were trying to achieve, the patterns we've worked on.

"The dynamics changed in the second half, they had opportunities to take more risk and press us, so it was a different puzzle and we had to find our way through."

The Dons face a trip to Morecambe on Saturday before ending the year with back-to-back home games against Colchester United and Crawley Town.

A healthy haul of points could see them start 2024 in the play-off places and in with a chance of a return to League One following last season's relegation.

Asked whether he is a head coach who keeps a close eye on the league table, Williamson replied: "It's irrelevant to me. Obviously going into the last month, six weeks (of the season), then you start to pay more attention.

"For now, it's just about watching that game (against Forest Green) back, seeing the elements we did well in the first half and the elements we could do better in the second."

Max Dean scored the first goal against Forest Green, his seventh in his past nine appearances in all competitions.

"At half-time he was frustrated (despite his goal), and I said 'you've got to keep occupying the back line and the centre-halves and then when the time comes, you've got goals in you'," Williamson added.

"Max has got bundles of energy and he wants to be involved in everything all the time."
