Swansea City could yet benefit from a promotion clause in the deal that took Joel Piroe to Leeds United last summer.

Swansea would have received about £2m as part of the Piroe transfer had Leeds beaten Southampton in last Sunday’s Championship play-off final.

The Whites’ defeat at Wembley means there will be no additional payment for Piroe this summer.

However, the promotion clause runs for the duration of the four-year contract Piroe signed when he joined Leeds in a deal worth in excess of £10m.

The striker, 24, scored 14 goals in 49 appearances in his first season at Leeds.

The Elland Road club are likely to start the 2024-25 season as one of the favourites to win promotion to the Premier League.

They missed out on an immediate return to the top flight after being beaten 1-0 in the play-off final by Southampton, who are managed by former Swansea boss Russell Martin.
