Postecoglou condemns social media abuse and backs Johnson
Ange Postecoglou has condemned social media abuse aimed at footballers while backing Wales forward Brennan Johnson to thrive at Tottenham Hotspur.
Johnson reportedly deactivated his Instagram account because of criticism in the wake of his club鈥檚 derby defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.
Postecoglou says the 23-year-old, who has scored five Spurs goals since joining from Nottingham Forest last September, is 鈥減robably lacking a bit of confidence鈥.
But the Tottenham boss says it is 鈥渟ad鈥 that abuse on social media has become commonplace.
鈥淚 hate how we鈥檝e just normalised all that stuff,鈥 Postecoglou said.
鈥淚鈥檝e been around long enough and even when I was playing, I copped a fair bit. But it was usually on the terraces and then the game was over and you鈥檇 go home.
鈥淵ou鈥檙e talking about a young guy who is probably lacking a bit of confidence at the moment. Things haven鈥檛 gone his way.
鈥淏ut he comes here every day, he鈥檚 working his backside off, he鈥檚 asking for feedback, he鈥檚 doing everything right, he鈥檚 trying so hard to become the player he wants to be. It鈥檚 hurting him a lot.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not like he鈥檚 out on the town and he doesn鈥檛 care and he rolls up late. So what鈥檚 his crime? His crime is he isn鈥檛 performing at the level that people expect of him.鈥
Spurs paid in excess of 拢45m to sign Johnson after he shot to prominence at Forest, scoring 29 goals in 108 appearances for the City Ground club after coming through their academy.
But the Nottingham-born player has struggled for consistency since moving to north London.
He has so far made 38 Spurs appearances, including 26 Premier League starts.
Postecoglou says that dealing with criticism over performances 鈥渋s part of growth鈥 for a footballer.
But he added: 鈥淭hat getting abuse, and it is abuse and a lot of it personal, is oh well, that鈥檚 part of the territory. I don鈥檛 see that.
鈥淚f somebody is abusive to me, they鈥檙e going to hear it back. I鈥檒l take criticism because that鈥檚 my role, and scrutiny, you have to because that鈥檚 your role, but I don鈥檛 have time for abuse.鈥
Postecoglou added that he feels sorry for young people that social media, and all that comes with it, is 鈥減art of their world鈥.
鈥淭he fact that they鈥檝e got to limit their world, close their world a little bit because of鈥 I mean what kind of person writes abusive things to an individual?鈥 he added.
鈥淐riticism is one thing, exasperation at a game, you accept that. To sit down and write something abusive anonymously鈥 say it in front of me, you鈥檒l get a punch on the nose, you won鈥檛 do it again, mate. But they won鈥檛 do that.鈥
Postecoglou, whose side are 13th in the early-season table, could include Johnson when Tottenham go to Coventry City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
鈥淲hen I look at Brennan and I see a young man who is trying his hardest to be the best he can be,鈥 he said.
鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 always guarantee success and it鈥檚 part of his journey how he deals with all this. But he鈥檚 a great kid, a great footballer and I鈥檓 very optimistic about what he鈥檚 going to do for us.鈥
