The Open 2011: Gallacher and Whiteford lead Scots

Whiteford is five behind the leaders at Sandwich

Top Scots Stephen Gallacher and Peter Whiteford were five strokes off the pace after the opening round of the 140th Open Championship.

English amateur Tom Lewis and Danish veteran Thomas Bjorn fired five-under-par 65s at Royal St George's.

Martin Laird, the highest-ranked Scot on the world rankings, was a further two shots behind his compatriots.

Former Open champions Paul Lawrie and Sandy Lyle were another stroke behind, with debutant Scott Jamieson five over.
