England's men and women's teams both suffered defeats by Germany in the FIH Pro League in Monchengladbach.

Germany's women avenged their previous day's defeat with a 4-1 victory as England struggled to get going in the earlier of Thursday's matches.

Their men's side, who lost 1-0 to England on Wednesday, overturned the visitors' early lead to win 3-2.

England women are fifth in the table with eight points, while the men's side are seventh.

David Condon fired England in front after just three minutes before Malte Hellwig levelled the scores early in the second quarter.

Tom Grambusch converted from a penalty corner to give Germany the lead but James Gall hit back for 2-2.

However, Gonzalo Peillat's strike one minute later was enough for Germany to secure victory.

Earlier, England captain Hollie Pearne-Webb said her side were made to pay for their "poor start" against Germany.

Charlotte Stapenhorst opened the scoring for the hosts before Nike Lorenz doubled their lead in the fifth minute.

England threatened a late comeback when Hannah Martin scored in the final quarter but Hannah Gablac and Pia Maertens sealed the win late on.

"We saw ourselves 2-0 down very early on, which is hard to come back from," Pearne-Webb told BT Sport. "We were pleased with the result yesterday but there is lots to learn from today.

"Our ability to win and put in performances back-to-back is going to be big for us. We have some exciting home games to look forward to now, which will be good preparation for the World Cup."

England women host China on 21 and 22 May in London, while the men's side are next in action against Canada on the same dates.
