Nottingham Panthers beat Cardiff Devils 2-1 after a dramatic shootout at the Vindico Arena.
Only Kristoff Kontos was able to find the net as both sides had five attempts at goal.
Devils had taken the lead through Duke Reid in the opening period, before Didrik Henbrant levelled the scores in the second.
Goaltenders Ben Bowns and Ryan Bednard then shone as neither side could find a winner in the third period and then overtime.
The teams will meet again on Sunday in the reverse fixture at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena.
