The European Eventing Championships are held every two years - this year's competition is taking place in Avenches, Switzerland from 23-26 September.

The equestrian competition comprises three disciplines - dressage, cross country and jumping.

The dressage was completed on Friday and cross country on Saturday, with the medals decided after the jumping on Sunday.

Each competing country can field a team of four riders and two individuals. At least three of the four team riders must complete the competition, with the best three scoring riders counting towards the team score.

Medals are also awarded for the best individual riders.

Hosts Germany won the 2019 competition, with Germany's Ingrid Klimke claiming the individual prize.

  5. What is eventing?published at 19:46 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

Eventing involves three separate disciplines - dressage, cross country and jumping - completed over three consecutive days.

Dressage takes place in a rink in front of judges, who score the individual movements of horse and rider based on harmony, rhythm and expression - the impression should be of horse and rider dancing together.

Cross country involves solid fences ridden over uneven ground. A course is designed to test horse and rider's endurance and skill - typically the course uses rustic wooden jumps instead of brightly coloured fences.

Jumping is the final event, in which horse and rider jump over coloured fences, obstacles and water jumps within a time limit.

The ultimate aim of eventing is to be the horse and rider with the fewest points after completing all three elements.
