Salford City Reds assistant coach Sean Long has resigned from his position at the club after 18 months in the role.

The move comes after Brian Noble's appointment as the new head coach at the Salford City Stadium.

The 36-year-old former Great Britain scrum-half moved to the Reds in August 2011 as assistant to then-head coach Matt Parrish.

Long has been to coach their youth side.

Salford chief executive Ed Farish said: "We wanted to keep him. He's worked very hard here and he's got good football knowledge.

"But people make their own decisions. I think he's looking for new challenges."

Long began his career at Wigan, but it was with arch-rivals St Helens where he made his name, featuring in four title-winning sides.

He also had spells at Widnes and Hull FC.
