Whitehaven captain James Newton suffered fractured vertebrae in his neck during a match on Sunday.
Newton, 32, walked off the pitch with the help of medical personnel in Whitehaven's 23-20 Championship win over Halifax Panthers at their Ortus Rec ground.
But after receiving treatment, the hooker was taken by ambulance to hospital where he spent the night.
Tests revealed the fractured vertebrae and the club stated that the forward continues to receive specialist care.
"All of our thoughts at Whitehaven Rugby League are with our captain, his family and loved ones at this time," the club said.
Newton has been with Whitehaven for 11 seasons over a career which has also included spells at Hull FC and Workington.
