A trampolinist in action

Trampolining in Staffordshire

By Matt Lee
There are two decent clubs in the county, they cater for any age or ability between them - here's a guide to trampolining in Staffordshire...

There are two decent Trampolining clubs in the county.

For adults only there is the Staffordshire University Trampoline Club. It has three trampolines and two coaches.

For any ages or ability there is the City of Stoke-on-Trent Trampoline Club. It will only take 30 people a session, which means five people to a trampoline so that each person gets a good go and is trained to their standards.

They have also started up an initiative with Newcatle Borough Council to do a 'youth academy,' where smaller clubs from around Newcastle-under-Lyme will pass on promising youngsters to the City of Stoke-on-Trent club for further training.

Who are the Top Clubs?

  • Staffordshire University Trampoline Club

Staffordshire University Trampoline Club - the trampoline club at Staffordshire University. They have been going for almost ten years and have a regular membership of approximately 25 people, with a mixture of students and local residents.

  • City of Stoke-on-Trent Trampoline Club

They were formerly known as Bradwell Trampoline Club. They have been active for over 15 years (as of 2005) after they took over from a schools club that has been running for over 40 years!

They have been highly successful being Midlands and they are the holders of Staffordshire Champions, they also have 10 National bouncers and numerous regional bouncers.

The club has 180 members and runs on Tuesday through to Friday but unfortunatley there is a small waiting list due to the success of the club.
We do admit all ages but they cannot be younger than 4 and half - sorry!

The top clubs have a few champs!

City of Stoke-on-Trent has had several victories on a national level and is strong presence in the regional competitions.

The City of Stoke-on-Trent Trampoline Club also trains one of the regions upcoming stars - in the form of Lani Dacey. The eleven year old is already ranked 2nd in the UK (as of 2005) for her age group and has competed for Great Britain!

Staffordshire University Trampoline Club have regular competitors in the BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) finals and other international opens in Ireland and Scotland.

How to get started

The best person to contact if you want to get involved with trampolining would be:

  • Coach of City of Stoke-on-Trent Trampoline Club Diane Pearson, on 01782 397198,
  • Or the coach of the Staffordshire University Trampoline Club, Simon Filson, on 07786080500

Where can I buy equipment?

Unfortunately there are not many shops for trampoline gear.
There is a shop called Carita House in Stapeley, near Nantwich, who you can contact on 01270 627722 but that will only cater for your basic needs.

If you are looking for a large order, John Harrison Sport Kit Manufacture in Preston, Lancashire is your best bet and you can contact them on 01772 423054

Is it dangerous?

Unfortunately trampolining can be a very dangerous sport.
There are any number of injuries that you could inflict on yourself from a broken neck to a scratched elbow, however, serious injuries are not common!

Louise Finney from City of Stoke on Trent Trampoline Club wrote to us to say.....

"Many myths still exist about the dangers involved in the sport so I would like to put peoples minds at rest and ensure them that their children would be in very safe hands although of course like any sport there is always a risk!!

"If you would like any more information or would like to do more coverage please do not hesitate to contact us as the sport needs promoting!! Click here to see our website
Thank you to Matt for trying to promote the sport in the area and I hope their will be many more young budding bouncers in the area who will join us.

"We are one of the most successful sports club throughout Staffordshire and thanks to the hard work of several coaches are now very well known on the trampoline circuit all over the UK."
