Snow sports

There are various places where you can try out snow sports in Staffordshire, we give you a brief intro to Tamworth Snowdone, Stoke Ski Centre and Kidsgrove Ski Centre.

Stoke Ski Centre

Stoke Ski Centre based at the Festival Park site in Etruria, just outside Hanley. It's a good place for beginners who have an interest in winter sports. Learn how to ski, snowboard or try the exhilarating toboggan run!

AS well as the ski slope and lift, the centre prvides ski, snow board and tobogganing facilities plus the UK's FIRST Alpine Roller Coaster!

Prices are competitive at 拢24 per 1 1/2 hour skiing lesson for adults and only 拢8 for children (2005 prices). Snowboarding lessons are around 拢16. Recreational time on the slope is available from 拢10.50 - 拢30 for adults depending on the amount of time on the slope and season, and 拢8.50 - 拢28 for children.

There are sessions for anyone who wishes to ski no matter what level you are at, including a tots ski class. Lounge area too.

For further information check out the website on the right hand side of this page.

Tamworth Snowdome

Tamworth Snowdome is based at Leisure Island in Tamworth - it is internationally acclaimed for all snow sports.

Facilities include a 170 metre 'real snow' slope, viewing gallery, bar and restaurant (in the style of a Swiss Alpine chalet!) lockers and free car park.

Prices vary depending on the time of year, but an hours ski / snowboard lesson cost around 拢30 for adults and 拢20 for children, and there are several full day packages costing between 拢69 - 拢170 for adults, with discounts for members.

Tip - check the Snowdome website for discounts and special offers which are usually available!

During the busy winter months, Snowdome advises people to book in advance.

Check their website to find out more and check prices and other details, as they tend to change!

Kidsgrove Ski Centre

Ski-Kidsgrove is in the northern half of the county. It's set in the beautiful parkland of Bathpool Park in Kidsgrove.

The North Staffs Ski Club Ltd operates the slope on a non profit making basis. All work is done by volunteers and all the revenue is put back into improving the clubs facilities, this makes the slope one of the cheapest in the country!

Facilities include - 100 metres long slope with a new snow-like surface, a button type ski lift, flood lights so skiers can see in all weathers day or night. There is also a ski lodge with tea shop.

The club also organises social events such as bike rides, club walks, white water rafting, BBQ鈥檚, club holidays and much more. Details of these can be found on their website.

Prices are pretty cheap, for example lessons are 拢35 for 3 x 1.5 hour sessions for adults, and 拢25 for children and students. Recreational skiing is 拢8 per hour or 拢4 per hour for children and students - but is only open to members. Associate Membership is 拢15 Adults and 拢10 Juniors.

For more information check out their website on the right hand side of this page.

What you told us!

Harry Butt from Stafford gave us this review of Tamworth Snowdone - he describes himself as the most-travelled man in Staffordshire, and a complete tourism nut! Thanks Harry.

Real snow all year round! Tamworth Snowdome is the best place to go if you want a taste of what it's like to ski on the real snow... almost! The speed and the ease of movement is there but sometimes snow coverage is not very deep, which allows for some truly hairy moments when you hit an icy patch.

That said, the curving main slope is 170 metres of pure fun, and if you're into skiing, snowmobiling, tobogganing, snowblading and snowboarding (phew!), then this is much closer to the real thing than dry ski slopes.

If you can't do the difficult stuff, then there are other things to enjoy in the evenings - including adrenaline tubing (this consists of holding on to a huge rubber inner tube and flying down the slope).
There are also 'Learn to Ski in a Day' courses, which teaches people recreational skiing. Plus there are also lessons aimed at improving your technique too.

Kit hire is included in the price; and there is a bar & restaurant in the style of a Swiss Alpine chalet. Nice.

TIP: It is pretty cold when you get onto the slopes, so wrap up warm!
