Christmas

cars at a petrol station

An alternative Christmas at your local garage!

Claire is the manager of petrol stations in Smallthorn and Longport. They’re both open on Christmas Day, so she has a very busy day. ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Stoke’s Helen Thomas found out more about her alternative Christmas…

So Christmas day - what is it like?

Claire: "Very busy to be honest, we’re the last port of call I think when everyone’s forgot everything, or you think you’re all organised and then you’re not! So busiest day of the year for us surprisingly!

"It’s not a bad day to work, we all chip in and do a couple of hours each, so it’s not too painful to come in. Customers are normally in very good spirits, so it’s nice everybody’s quite jolly on Christmas day!"

What sort of things do they come in for?

Claire: "It’s sometimes petrol, we even have a few people who come in to jet wash their cars on Christmas day! Mainly bread and milk what everybody’s ran out of or things they’ve forgotten!

"The batteries obviously - the kids are up at 6.30 in the morning aren’t they, the batteries are forgotten, so it’s across to us - a couple of customers still in their pyjama’s - but the kids needs are greater I think!

"Phone credit as well - everyone’s got new mobile phones for Christmas day so they want to start ringing and texting on those!

"This will be my 10th year working on Christmas day, but it’s ok - I’m used to it now!"

Do you still have time for you’re Christmas lunch?

Claire: "Always yes! I’m cooking again this year, so we have to get our preparations done Christmas eve I think.

"We even have a few customers who bring us a mince pie or a turkey buttie so that makes the day a lot easier to cope with. We do a have a good boss who leaves us a Christmas present on Christmas morning in there as well and most of the cashiers come in Santa hats….

"To be honest because I’ve done it for that long..I think I’d actually miss it if I didn’t do it actually now!"
