Gig Junkie - photographer

Ask local rock bands whom they like in the photo-pit, and Sarah Thompson, aka 'GigJunkie' is one of the names that comes up. Now she has collected her photos into a book

Gig Junkie is her name, and music photography is her trade. If you attend many local gigs, you've probably seen her at work.听

So, if you ever wondered what her work is like, now's your chance - with a book of over 200 of her photos.

Gig Junkie admits that her interest only kicked in in 2004, but she's had success since - with publication in Move Mag, NME, Artrocker Magazine and (of course!) on her own website.听

She has also worked with general interest magazines to do Staffordshire photographs.

Book

'GigJunkie 1' is a photo diary of her photography from 2005 to 2008.

The soft cover book has 120 pages containing Black & White and Colour photographs of bands which include Babyshambles, The Cribs, Bloc Party, Editors, Foo Fighters, Morrissey, Paul Weller, Ian Brown (pictured right), Kasabian, We Are Scientists and many local bands.

You can hear Gig Junkie talking about her book and her work by clicking on the link in the top right hand corner of this page.听She is in interview on the 大象传媒 Subculture show.

Question Time

We asked Gig Junkie a few questions about herself....

Q.听 What's your real name?
A.听 Gig Junkie.

Q.听 Ah. Right.听 Are you local?
A.听 I was born in Newcastle and apart from a few years in Manchester have always lived in Stoke.

Q.听 Tell us about how you got into this...
A.听 I have been going to gigs for years and used to take my camera but never really got anything worthwhile.
It was only when Babyshambles played at The Underground in April 2004, and my images were published in NME that I decided to get more involved with it and started getting photo passes. That enabled me to get into the photo-pit at gigs, and the chance to get better images than I could get before.
By the way, The Club NME video is something I have made myself using my photographs.

Q.听 Fave local bands?
A.听 The local bands I like working with are Friends of Ken, who have become good friends and allow me access to recordings etc as well as gigs.
The Rebounds are also good 听and I also enjoy working with Spectrum Fires.听
Agent Blue are always good to photograph as they put on a good show and the crowds get a bit hectic.
Apart from local bands it was great to photograph Ian Brown at the VFestival.

Q.听 Any advice to budding photographers?
A.听 My advice to anyone wanting to do this kind of photography is to go to as many gigs as possible - this will help with understanding the lighting etc.
And if you are doing work you think others should see, get a website - it's the best way to get your portfolio seen by other people in the business, and gives people a way to identify and contact you.
