As part of our Community Memories series we explore what it was like for the Jews who escaped persecution in their native lands, and arrived in the unfamiliar North Staffordshire.

Have you ever arrived in a foreign country not really knowing the lingo and not knowing anyone there?听 It's quite a challenge. But nowadays with guide books, tourist information and English so widely spoken most people can muddle through okay.

But imagine rolling up on foreign shores with nothing but a few pennies, no luggage, no idea about the language and no idea what to expect.听 Well, back in the late 19th century that was what it was like for thousands of Jews coming to this country escaping persecution in Prussia and Eastern Europe. Jews that eventually swelled the ranks of the community in North Staffordshire.

Painting the picture for us of what it would've been like are local historian Shula Moreland and the leader of the community, Sidney Morris...
