Shotley
Gate
This
picture was taken on the foreshore at Shotley Gate at the very tip
of the Shotley peninsula. From this point you can see both the Stour
and Orwell estuaries. In the distance are Harwich and Parkeston
Quay.
The Stour and Orwell estuaries are internationally important for
birdlife and are designated as a Special Protection Area. Since
this is also a busy commercial shipping lane it requires sensitive
management to protect and conserve the mudflats and saltmarshes.
