In May 2005 the Waveney Sunrise Scheme commissioned a national competition for the design of a new landmark for Lowestoft.

Four artists have now been short listed from a total of 34 who expressed an interest in designing a feature for this key part of the town centre.

The organisers of the competition hope the chosen design will become an iconic image in the area and members of the public will help choose which artist will be selected.

There will be an exhibition at Lowestoft Central Library from 17th-24th September 2005, when there will be a chance to comment on and vote for your favourite design.

You can also log onto the Waveney Sunrise website to place your vote.听 A panel of judges, made up of local district and county councillors, members of the business community, Lowestoft College and the Civic Society, will take the results of the consultation into consideration when making the final decision on the selection of the winning artist.

The chosen sculpture will be a replacement for the fisherman removed from Station Square in March 2004 and it is intended to mark the gateway between the seafront and the town centre.

The landmark will be a piece of public art that reflects and respects Lowestoft's past, but at the same time looks forward to its future.

All the artists were briefed about the town and the aims of the Sunrise Scheme in revitalising the town centre.听 They were advised that the designs should reflect the bright, modern look created by the Sunrise Scheme.

The winning artist will work closely with the Sunrise Scheme to develop the final design proposal, prior to installation, which is planned for summer 2006.
