The Darkness
The band with new bassist Richie Edwards

The Darkness: One Way Ticket To Hell ... And Back

Album review by Andrew Woodger
Any doubt that Lowestoft's finest couldn't follow-up their world-conquering debut Permission To Land have been dispelled. With Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker at the helm, a gloriously over-the-top album shows the band do, indeed, still rock.

The departure of bassist Frankie Poullain, a long gestation period, lukewarm receptions to the new material at Reading and Leeds ... many feared The Darkness were one hit album wonders.听 However, they're proved their heads haven't disappeared up their own mid-table orifii (as Alan Partridge might say).听听 The new album is shot through with their trade-mark schoolboy humour with the songs rooted in the classic rock sound of AC/DC, early Queen and, to a lesser extent, Thin Lizzy.

One Way Ticket To Hell ... And Back
One Way Ticket To Hell ... And Back

Given that he produced Bohemian Rhapsody, it's no surprise that Roy Thomas Baker throws in everything but the kitchen sink.听 The opener One Way Ticket has pan pipes, snorting, sitars - and that's just the intro of the increasingly catchy hit single.

The rest of the album simply puts a smile on your face and has you playing "spot the musical reference".听听 Knockers seems to take its lyrical theme from AC/DC's Whole Lotta Rosie,听 Is It Just Me? riffs away like the lovechild of Angus & Co.'s Giving The Dog A Bone (or听 is it Warriors Of Genghis Khan by Bad News?) and is that a Rolf Harris stylophone solo on Girlfriend?

LIVING ON DARKNESS AVENUE?
Roadsign spotted in Hell - or was it Lowestoft?

Pollain is credited on four songs on what is quite a short album which clocks it at only just over half an hour.听 Never mind the quantity, feel the width as the band would probably say.听听 More top-quality puerile poetry can be found in English Country Garden which is presumably a reference to what Dan Hawkins gets up to in the vegetable patch of his Norfolk rockstar farmhouse.听 Don't buy a used marrow from these men.

All that's left for the band is to take control of the USA, but one wonders what they make of the saucy seaside postcard humour (clearly still alive and well in Lowestoft) and references to the "flatlands of East Anglia" (gee, is that in Wales?), "dinner lady arms" and "village fetes".

The only weak points are the more serious, slower tracks Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time and Blind Man which don't ever really take-off.听 Someone at the record company, or possibly Ma Hawkins, has clearly cleaned out their mouths with a bar of soap as well.听 There's not a "*拢nt" or even a "f$%@" this time round.

Justin Hawkins from The Darkness
Justin says don't forget to Have Your Say ...

The only question that remains is whether Justin can follow-up the self-deprecation of Bald and eventually shave off his hair in the manner of follically-challenged new bassist Richie Edwards.听听 If he attempts the full Bobby Charlton sweep-over then we'll know The Darkness have truly lost it.听

And is that Black Shuck coming out of the locomotive chimney on the album cover?

I found this understated album for just 拢2.99 at Amazon, which is less than the going rate for a chart single! However it is one of the best 拢2.99's I have ever spent. Many years will I return to this album, it certainly is a one way journey without a chance of a return. It's just a shame this will be the last the world will get to experience the creative genius of the most original, charismatic, entertaining and fulfilling bands for the best part of a decade. Every track has a unique flavour, yet the rock ballads build with resonating momentum, with expertly performed additional guitar riffs and sequences from a midi-moog that have been integrated to perfection. This band has such quality it has unfortunately blown itself apart. Maybe it is some sort of universal paradox that the universe does not have the capacity to accommodate it. This band defines a genre, it's just a shame there isn't a cat in hell's chance of another band getting even close to following in the footsteps of something that has truly revolutionised a flagging industry. Long may the Darkness be revered, and never shall the legend be forgotten.

Sadly this was the crucial 2nd album that burst the bubble and brought them crashing back down to earth! Little more than a pub band that struck lucky in my view..Justine Hawkins was so lucky to get away with it so long..he cant sing! In praise they flew the rock flag in the mainstream for a while but are simply a one-hit band. The lowest points were Ego Hawkins appearing on various tv shows acting like he/band were somehing great after only one hit album..everyone knows its the crucial 2nd lp that establishs a band longterm. than the humiliation of seeing him desperately trying to claw back fame by doing the [Cringe worthy] Eurovision and failing miserably. Bye bye darkness you had your 5 minutes of fame! CALLEN [The Voice]

i just have to say that the darkness is the best british group out of all british bands ou their. i agree with the reviewer at some points like the sound of the album and how they are taking over bands these days. but what is wrong with the slow songs i find them awesome . plus the slow songs might mean something special to the band. i like the album and think it is great and like all of the songs on it. the darkness rocks butt!!!!

Totally Is agree with yoo tommy! i think that "permission " was Great! But i Think that "one Way Ticket to hell...And back" is totally awsome! The Best Album In 2005!!!
Sophie!

I love this band but this album is short of everything that made 'Permission' so great. Riffs are bad, lyrics are embarrassingly bad and everything is totally overproduced.
Tommy

yeah if you listen carefully in one way ticket right before the sitar solo he says 'stick it up your f* nose' just for the record
