Secondly and more importantly how would the intensity of the book be transferred to the silver screen. Brokeback Mountain has been directed by Ang Lee, probably best known for the commercial Hulk, and the less commercial Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, a Director who鈥檚 skill Hulk aside, appears to be to turn stories into immense cinematic experiences. For those that haven鈥檛 seen the film it is worthwhile saying that it is much more than just a 鈥済ay cowboy film鈥 as the press would have us believe.听 This is a story of heart wrenching emotion, the film is set in Wyoming and Ang Lee has managed to wring every last ounce of beauty out of the landscape, this alone is worth seeing. The story is a very simple love story, set initially in the early sixties, its about two cowboys who meet whilst working, fall in love, both get married and have children. If only it was that simple, the story spans a period of 25 years, it is a tortuous, claustrophobic and highly charged story of two people who live in a time and place where their love for each other can only exist hidden from public sight.
As you would expect nothing is ever straight forward, at the end of the film you feel physically exhausted as everybody鈥檚 lives seem to gradually unravel.听 It is a credit to Ang Lee that such depth has been transferred to film from a short book but credit must be given to the actors, each actor manages to play the characters in a way that makes them truly believable.听 Both Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are exceptional leads; Heath Ledger deserves the Oscar for his portrayal of Ennis, the drawling accent and the slightly slovenly posture, Gyllenhaal for his powerful portrayal of a man who believes, despite what everyone thinks, that they should have a future together.听 Supporting roles from Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams as the wives are equally powerful, these roles being expanded beyond that of the original story. At the end of the day this is a good old-fashioned love story, a film that would not have been made at any other time.听 This film is beautiful, achingly beautiful.听 Ang Lee has made a masterpiece and I for one feel all the better for seeing it.听 Every other review I have seen has given it a five out of five rating, believe the hype this film truly deserves it.听听听 last updated: 26/11/2008 at 14:32 Have Your SayHave you seen Brokeback Mountain?
