Who Do You Think You Are?You are in: Suffolk > History > Who Do You Think You Are? > The Wyand family The Lake of Shining Waters The Wyand familyValerie Humphrey How many people with the surname "Wyand", living in Canada today, have their roots in Suffolk? I've managed to trace my Wyand family tree back to the 1600s and discovered that six members of the family left Debenham in the 1830s to start a new life in Canada.听 This is our story. Wyand family cairn John Wyand was a cabinet maker/carpenter and was living in Debenham when he married Mary Worledge in St Mary Magdalene Church, Debenham in May, 1805. Life in the 1830s was difficult for the people of Debenham with little work on the land and by checking the Canadian records I have established that the Wyand family paid their own passage to Prince Edward Island.听 Two of John and Mary's sons, 23-year-old John and 15-year-old Alfred, went to Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1831. In 1834 their parents (John and Mary) and brothers Samuel and Henry, sailed to Quebec.听 They stayed the winter there and went on to Cavendish in 1835.听听 They left behind two unmarried daughters and their eldest son William, who had married and had a son named William.听 My mother was the granddaughter of that William. My mother grew up hearing that her distant Whyand relatives were living in the North American continent but I feel sure no one had ever mentioned Prince Edward Island. In the very early 1990s I made several visits to the Ipswich Record Office researching the Wyand family and soon discovered that, except for my direct ancestry, I could not find any more information about the Wyands.听 I discovered听 that between the British Census of 1851 and 1861 the spelling of the family name changed to Whyand.听 Wyand family group I then started looking for the surname Wyand in Canada and the USA .听 Through the internet I discovered that a distant cousin in Prince Edward Island was interested in her ancestry.听This was the family we had lost for probably 120 years. Cavendish, Prince Edward Island is synonymous with the writer Lucy Maud Montgomery and her most famous novel Anne of Green Gables.听 Cavendish, Suffolk, is derived from the same name source as the Dukes of Devonshire who were granted land in both places as rewards.听 Lucy Maud was a close neighbour of the Wyand family. In the Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery Volume I, Oxford University Press, she mentions several of my Wyand family.听 She grew up knowing all the Wyand family and went to school with several of them. PHOTOGRAPHS:

This was a most interesting piece of information. My deceaseds wife mother Nellie Hazel Jackson (nee Christie)sister, Myrtle Pearl Christie married Frank Wyand Dec 24, 1925.I and my wife spent many a happy time at Frank and Myrtle's farm at Irma, Alberta and with their daughter Hazel (married Joe Oracheski). Unfortuantely my wife (Dorothy) and Hazel passed away within six weeks of each other.
