ReviewsYou are in: Suffolk > Entertainment > Theatre and Dance > Reviews > Not drowning, but floating Not drowning, but floatingBy Rachel Thomas Fresh from the 2006 Edinburgh Festival is Hoi Polloi鈥檚 "Floating" which they brought to Ipswich's New Wolsey Theatre in February 2007. The performance was fronted by Hugh Hughes who was the winner of the Total Theatre Award 2006. Hugh and his collaborator Sioned Rowlands' performances are outstanding in this heart warming and hilarious tale which asks if we're defined by where we come from.听 Between them they bring to life the characters and operate a plethora of variously- aged multi-media equipment such as 1970s slide viewers, chains in buckets, overhead projectors and wrestling magazines. Hugh Hughes, who's born and raised on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales, decides it is time to explore life outside this small island. He leaves the house and walks down the main street of Menai towards the bridge which will lead him to the mainland and his future. As he reaches the bridge the island is hit by an earthquake: the bridge crumbles and Anglesey breaks free, so do his hopes for a future outside the island. Using a mixture of performance media, Hugh and his Sioned artfully reconstruct the island鈥檚 journey across the Atlantic up to the Arctic and beyond. The carefully crafted mix of stand-up comedy, audience participation and visual media draw the audience into this imaginative tale. It's set in 1982 and the images used to transport us back to that time have us thirty somethings sniggering in remembrance of childhood holidays and dreadful swimwear. The audience is asked to take a leap of faith with some of the methods of firing our imagination but it just adds to dragging you deeper into the story. It's a hilarious and all-consuming production guaranteed to transport you to another place and time. Floating is touring the UK until the end of the month before travelling to New York.听 One can't help but wonder what the Big Apple will make of a tale of a small island located off another small island - namely Great Britain! Hoi Polloi are due to come back in May with a work-in-progress called Story Of A Rabbit which they also plan to take to the Edinburgh Festival. Floating continues its tour in Liverpool, the Barbican in London and in New York.听 Visit the Hoi Polloi website for more details.听 last updated: 11/04/2008 at 14:22 Have Your SayDo you agree with our reviewer?
