Hayze

Hayze - dreaming of escape

This Ipswich indie-guitar four piece have several singles/EPs under their belts and gig regularly around East Anglia and into London.

Mini review

Indie guitar rock reminiscent of Hawkwind's churning riffs at first, but also of the Bunnymen and even Joy Division. The sound seems to belie their aim to be "balls to the wall rock and rawl".听 Maybe they need to let their hair down and really add some aggression to realise this.听 The singer lapses into an American accent sometimes which seems at odds with the lyrics about East Anglian small town dreaming.听 That said, the songs and guitars are all in place - can they add that something extra to really stand out from the indie guitar pack?

Line up:

Pete Thompson - vocals/guitar
Jamie Shields - bass
Jim Newstead - drums
Powers - guitar

The band started gigging in 2003 around the usual haunts in Ipswich and later further afield at places including the Camden Barfly and Manchester's Dry Bar.

They've released several EPs - Between The City & The Sea (2003), Waiting To Fall (2004), Corrected Version Of Previous Pump (2004), What Goes Around Comes Around (2007) and a download single Make Back Time (2007).

The band recorded with Dan Hawkins in 2008 and the single Making Plans is due for release at the end of the year.

Their debut album In The Box Seat was released on Hi Tom Records in 2005.

Lead singer Pete Thompson says they try and sing about where they're from: "We're between the city and the sea, a stone's throw from the ocean and a 拢15 tank of fuel from London.

"I think our songs reflect it too, that feeling that you're inbetween life, stuck on the outskirts of something.听

"You have to write and sing about what you know. We know about growing up in small towns, but having big dreams."

In a world where nobody can be anybody, Hayze deserve to be somebody to everybody.

Chris, Ipswich
Saw them supporting Greg Griffin at the Railway...it was a great show...there aint many bands in Ipswich who play good rock n roll, its refreshing to see it's not a load of ol' punk rubbish!

Dan, Mansfield
I saw these guys in Leeds a few months back, and they rocked! Great songs, really well done. Can't wait to see them again soon! And yeah - I reckon it's his northern accent coming through too.

We live in an 'image' obsessed media today and to stay sane and focused we need to wear blinkers so a name has to stand out and leave an 'impression'. regardless how good your music is I think your name lets you down. It says nothing!? Hayze fog confusion ?? it dosent conjure anything at all to me? dosent inspire me to want to know more. CALLEN [The Voice]

Jim, Ipswich
Ha! Interesting review! We're all from Ipswich and surrounding area but Pete's originally from Keighley near Leeds. Maybe its the West Yorkshire accent that's confusing the reviewer here.

elmo
