Beautiful monarch butterflies fly together around their habitat, creating a wonderful spectacle.

This clip shows the butterflies in slow motion, capturing their beauty.

This clip is from the series Wonders of Nature.

Teacher Notes

Ask pupils to use online sources and books to discover the parts of the world in which monarch butterflies are normally found.

The children could shade these areas on a world map, perhaps using a colour code to show the zones where monarchs are comparatively rare.

Watch the clip together and ask pupils to describe the butterfly's habitat.

Pupils could go on to use UK field guides to find out which butterflies are common in their own part of the world. In spring and summer, pupils could take a survey of butterfly numbers in a nearby garden or park.
