Why are we doing this and how can you participate?

The 大象传媒 is looking for young people aged 11-18 who want to report on a story that is important to their lives or the world around them, as part of the 大象传媒 Young Reporter Competition 2024.

The theme is 鈥楳e and My World鈥. Entrants need to submit an outline of a story idea using this theme. This can be either a written submission, or a recorded audio or video clip of no more than three (3) minutes duration.

The 大象传媒 will collect the personal data via an online platform used by the 大象传媒.

Stories will be shortlisted in two different age groups: 11-15 year olds and 16-18 year olds. All applicants for the 大象传媒 Young Reporter Competition must provide their parents/guardians contact details, so that their permission for entry can be confirmed.

The most original and interesting stories will be shortlisted and judged by presenters, reporters, senior editors and producers to be considered both on a regional and national level. The winning entrants will be broadcast by the 大象传媒 on TV, radio and/or online.

If we broadcast your story/contribution, this may include it being available online and/or on demand, and your contribution may be used again in a future broadcast. It may also include use on the 大象传媒鈥檚 social media channels.

What personal data will the 大象传媒 collect?

There are two types of personal data: personal data and special category data. Special category data is still personal data, but its processing by the 大象传媒 requires the 大象传媒 to follow additional compliance steps.

The 大象传媒 will collect and process the following personal data about young entrants:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Location (county or UK nation)
  • Audio/Video recordings (if applicable)

The 大象传媒 will collect and process the following personal data about parent/guardian(s) of young entrants:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Contact telephone number

The 大象传媒 may also process special category data about young entrants, depending on the content of the entry. This might include for example:

  • Race or ethnic origin
  • Religious or philosophical beliefs
  • Health information
  • Sexual orientation

Who is the Data Controller?

The 大象传媒 is the 鈥渄ata controller鈥 of your personal data. This means that the 大象传媒 decides what your personal data is used for, and the ways in which it is processed. For the avoidance of doubt, your personal data will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. As the data controller, the 大象传媒 has the responsibility to comply, and to demonstrate compliance with, data protection law.

Lawful basis for processing your personal data

The legal basis on which the 大象传媒 processes your personal鈥痙ata鈥痠s鈥痶he performance of its public task. The lawful basis on which the 大象传媒 processes your special category data is substantial public interest.

The 大象传媒鈥檚 role is to act in the public interest and鈥痶o鈥痵erve all audiences with content which informs, educates, and entertains.鈥疶his is consistent with the 大象传媒鈥檚 wider public purposes under its Royal Charter which includes reflecting, representing, and serving the diverse communities of all of the United Kingdom鈥檚 nations and regions and providing specialist educational content to help support learning for children and teenagers across the United Kingdom.

We also鈥痟ave鈥痑 legal obligation鈥痶o process the personal data of the winners鈥痠n order to鈥痗omply with relevant competition鈥痳egulations.

Sharing your personal data

The 大象传媒 works with our approved third-party providers who help us to provide some of our services. These partners only use your personal data on behalf of the 大象传媒 and not independently of the 大象传媒.

We may share personal data with a third party where required or permitted by law.

Retaining your personal data

If the entry is unsuccessful, the 大象传媒 will delete your personal data by 31st July 2024.

Contributions that are broadcast and/or published will be retained and archived in perpetuity.

Other data from winning entrants and their parents/guardians will be retained for two (2) years for regulatory and compliance purposes.

Your personal data will be stored in the UK and the EEA.

Your rights and more information

You have rights under data protection law:

  • You can request a copy of the personal data the 大象传媒 stores about you.
  • You have the right to request that we rectify any inaccurate or incomplete personal data that we hold about you.
  • You have the right to ask for the personal data we collect about you to be deleted, however there are limitations and exceptions to this right which may entitle the 大象传媒 to refuse your request.
  • In certain circumstances you have the right to restrict the processing of your personal data, or to object to the processing of your personal data.
  • You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal data to you or to another organisation, in certain circumstances.
