We Are TeessideYou are in: Tees > People > We Are Teesside > I need a hero Paul Waugh, local hero I need a heroWhen you find yourself hanging on to the edge of a cliff for dear life, Paul is the kind of man you want around! Paul Waugh came in to speak to Julie Donaldson on 大象传媒 Tees about his heroic acts, and why he's now thinking about leaving the Coast Guard..."I'm not a hero, I'm just doing my job" Says Paul Waugh, but not a lot of people would agree with that, particularly when you find out what he did to save the life of a thirteen year old girl. Tell us what happened on the day on that cliff? When we first got the call, we were sent to four girls stuck on the cliff. It was pitch black and blowing a gale, they'd tried to get down to the beach and had got stuck. Faye, who we rescued, had tried to climb up and get help because one of her friends was having an asthma attack further down.
We got the vehicle, got down into the fields, but the gates had three locks on them, and we were a field and a half away from the cliff edge... The police helicopter arrived and put a spot light on Faye, two of us over the field to check out the situation, I looked over the edge and could see a face. The face of a听 little 13 year old girl, Faye. We called for another team to come help us, but seeing her face frightened I knew I had to do something... I started to climb down. Faye had been stuck there for 45 minutes, in that time the cliff ledge had give way and she was hanging by her arms, holding on to tufts of grass. I had to go behind her and hold her on to the cliff edge. She had mild hypothermia, and the rescue helicopter was still another half an hour away. Find out the rest of the story, and why Paul's now facing issues over not using the correct equipment during the rescue here.
