Red squirrels are under threat

Save our Squirrels

A project based in Newcastle is working hard to save the dwindling population of red squirrels in the North of England...

How to get involved

If you are interested in helping SoS to conserve the red squirrels there are numerous ways you can get involved.

  • Squirrel hotline: 0845 347 9375 - Call the squirrel hotline if you spot a red or grey squirrel anywhere in the North of England. Reports of sightings are displayed in map form on the SoS website. People are also asked to report sightings of red squirrels that look as though they may be diseased.
  • Local SoS groups: SoS is hoping to set up local groups close to some the reserves. If you are interested in joining one - or setting one up - contact the office on 0191 284 6884.
  • Grey control: SoS work with the Red Squirrel Protection Partnership to support grey control in areas where it will aid conservation of red squirrels and to develop networks of people who are able to carry it out. Contact the office for more information.
  • Friends of the red squirrels: this is a membership organisation for people interested in red squirrel conservation and education.
  • Volunteers can also help with a variety of other tasks, such as helping to manage the squirrel sightings hotline at weekends.
