What kind of time commitment would be needed?The commitment required of an extra is more to do with flexibility than being able to dedicate large amounts of time. Film extras Extras are typically used for no more than a day or two at a time so few people do it as a full-time job. Full details are rarely given about work earlier than the afternoon before shooting so extras need to be flexible and organised enough to get to what might be a remote location for an early start with only a few hours' notice. What are film and TV companies looking for in extras?To the extent that films, dramas and adverts reflect the broad sweep of society there should be a place (and work) for people of any age or appearance. Is being an extra a good stepping stone if you want a career on the screen - is it likely to lead to bigger parts?Working as an extra offers various opportunities: insight into the filming process, professional contacts and the chance of securing an Equity card, for example. But it probably isn't wise to see it as a stepping stone to a career as a professional actor. Casting directors will rarely consider anyone for a speaking part without professional training or a string of credited roles.
