1955: The Queen opens London Airport

The Queen inaugurates new buildings in the centre of London Airport, part of a new complex designed to handle a growing number of air passengers.

She tells the gathered dignitaries: "London Airport has become the modern meeting place, where many tongues are spoken in friendship and goodwill."

The commentator is Richard Dimbleby.

London Airport was renamed Heathrow in 1966, and the central terminal area is now known as Terminal 2.
