1960: Lady Chatterley's Lover sells out
Lady Chatterley鈥檚 Lover was first published in its entirety in the UK on 10 November 1960.
The novel by DH Lawrence was first published in Italy in 1928, but had been banned in the UK for its sexually explicit scenes and use of profane words.
Under the Obscene Publications Act 1959, books considered obscene by some but that could be shown to have 鈥渞edeeming social merit鈥 might still be published. Penguin won the right to publish the book in its entirety in a much-publicised trial.
Bookshops across England sold out of all 200,000 copies of the novel鈥檚 first run on the first day of its publication.
