"I fell in love with Wales and Kit in the same week." Bob moved to Wales and fell in love. When he went home he found another love on the doorstep.

Transcript

"I fell in love with Wales and Kit in the same week. It was the end of September 1935. Tony and I were mates, age 15, and we were going on our pushbikes from Liverpool to Snowdon for a week's holiday. All the neighbours came outside to wave, and with much shouting and ringing of bells we set off.

The views and the countryside were terrific; we had not seen anything like it before. Then, the weather turned to sleet and snow, and we arrived back at Anthony's home, tired and soaking wet.

A sparkling-eyed school girl was sitting on the step, she introduced herself as Kit. We became sweethearts and were madly in love.

Then I went into the army. As soon as Kit was old enough we married.

By the time I came out of the army we had two children - a boy and a girl ... And all four of us - and the dog - came every weekend on a motorbike and sidecar to different parts of Wales. We all loved it ... And Kit never tired of Wales or me.

She was my inspiration, and always pushed me into bettering myself. We moved to live in Wales in 1970 and Kit and I were together for 63 years. We had 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. But sadly, she never saw her great-grandchildren.

When she died I made a vow that I would speak to someone about her everyday, and I have.

When I die, our ashes will be mixed together and scattered in the parts of Wales that we both loved. I will be together with my two great passions."

An interview with the author

Please tell us about yourself.
I am 83 years old with many stories to tell. I am now retired and I am now doing a writing course, after finishing courses in I.T. and Desktop Publishing. My wife and I moved to Wales in 1970 and my daughter has also moved to Wales with her two children.

What's your story about?
It's about meeting my wife and living in Wales. I felt that now was the right time to tell this story.

How did you find the workshop?
The most rewarding thing for me was the transformation from the first draft to the completion of the finished project with the aid of the team.

Your comments

"I loved hearing you speak the words of your story. Its simplicity and honesty brought tears to my eyes."
Susan Kennedy, Helensburgh, Australia.

"Thank you for sharing your story Bob. I did the opposite and moved to Liverpool to be with someone I loved."
Brian.

"True love never dies. You do know that in my book you have just put Romeo and Juliet in the shade. Thanks for your memories. God bless you."
Alan ex-scouse. Leamington Spa.

"Lovely story, Bob. I also came to Wales from Liverpool in 1972 and lived in Trelogan for 20 years. I now live in Kinmel Bay and love it here but I still remember my roots and love the Liverpool sence of humour. Good health to you."
Laura Kinmel Bay.

"It's great to log on to digital stories and find my story still there. I am 87 now and it's 4 years since I wrote " My Passions". It is great to know people still enjoy a true love story. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to read this story, and to the people who know me who asked is it you. Thanks to the original team and their faith in me. Digital sotytelling, onward & upward."
Bob Ashcroft (author), Kinmel Bay (2007).

"It made me cry - aren't people's ordinary stories just magic and extraordinary."
Sally, Sheffield, England.

"This is a beautiful story and tribute to a life-long love. Thanks for sharing it!"
Cathy Busby, Park Falls, USA.
