"For him, it was love at first sight."

Transcript

"My father, Granville, and my grandfather both worked for The Prudential in South Wales in Llantrisant. My grandfather was moved to North Wales by the company and settled in Cefn Mawr.

Being a good Baptist, the minister in the local church arranged for him to stay with a local family in the area. He went to Bethel Baptist Church on the first Sunday with the whole family, seeing all six children for the first time. The eldest girl caught his eye and he immediately decided she would make an ideal wife for his eldest son, Granville, who was living in South Wales.

He wrote to his son and invited him to come up to North Wales to stay for a holiday. My father arrived to discover that the whole family had gone on a Sunday School trip on the canal. So he went to the Trevor Basin in the hope that he would see them when they came over the big aqueduct. Finally the boat came into view, packed with people and his father pointed out the girl to him. For him, it was love at first sight.

They married when she was 20 years old at Bethel Baptist Church and then went to live in Barry. It turned out that my Grandfather had been stopping at the house of my future great grandmother. My father died at the age of 51 and my mother was so homesick she returned to live in Cefn once again.

One day I was taken for a walk by my Dad across the aqueduct to see a beautiful baby boy that had been born in Ron. Indeed he was beautiful for it turned out for 24 years later, he would become my husband in the same chapel as my parents were married in 1929."
