"I brought back another dream: the desire to return." Monica recalls her travelling adventures in her campervan around the Scottish wilderness.

Transcript

"My campervan and I had travelled two and a half thousand miles since I had driven off in her five weeks previously.

We had been on an adventure together touring the Scottish highlands and islands.

For ten years I'd longed to return to a particular beach on north Uist, where I'd been happy during an earlier holiday before I had beaten breast cancer and separated from my partner.

Having got there, I realised that I didn't want to turn around and head for home. I decided Orkney was worth a visit so I continued north!

I'd spent the night in many different locations and as long as I didn't peep out into the darkness and spook myself, I was fine.

Safe, snug and comfy cosy, ready for a quick getaway if needs be, with doors locked, shoes at the ready and key in ignition. You never know, someone might have been after my body!

As I toured from island to island I felt like the Queen of the Road in my newly-acquired 21-year-old camper van, bought with the help of my children. Here I was a great granny - nearer 70 than 60 - doing my thing!

Some thought I was nutty not to be relaxing in the sunshine of the Mediterranean, while others wondered how I could do this alone and not be scared or nervous. No ... For I was making a dream come true.

I arrived home feeling happy and pleased with myself. I had achieved what I had set out to do and more. For along with the seashells, photos and memories, I brought back another dream: the desire to return.

Now I can't wait to jump into my old campervan and trundle off again."

An interview with the author

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I am a 67-year-old great-grandmother living alone. I enjoy my computer class once a week. I love my garden and making greeting cards. I babysit my grandchildren. I am very much a family person who loves the outdoors and caravanning.

What's your story about?
The five weeks I spent alone in my campervan touring the highlands and islands of northern Scotland.

Why did you choose to tell this particular story?
I hoped my story would inspire others of similar age and circumstance to stop dreaming about things you would like to do and just do it! I hope to complete my tour of the Orkney Isles and Shetland Isles next year!

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
Seeing my story on film at the end of two wonderful weeks. Working with others on their stories and being involved with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ crew who were so encouraging.
