The Chair

By Alexandra Dukes
May 2003, Cardiff
A digital story from Capture Wales

Man vs dog for the chair

Alexandra describes how the chair has become one of the family - from being a place of rest for injured members to providing refuge for drunken siblings to the dogs' makeshift castle.

"When the chair first arrived in our dining room, it was a welcome sight for my dad. He was waiting for a hip and knee operation.

The dogs saw the chair and thought "Yippee! A bed," and jumped straight on, claiming it as their own.

Poor dad endured a daily fight to reclaim his rightful seat on the throne. We tried various ways of distracting the dogs...ringing the front doorbell; squeaking their favourite toys, but they just looked at us and raised their eyebrows as if to say "No chance!"

Now my dad is better, there is still a need for the chair. My gran has recently gone blind and now she sits on the throne where Honey and Fudge, her two royal lions, guard her faithfully.

Over the years, the chair has seen everything that has gone on in our family. Weddings, engagements, Christmases, birthdays...it has even been used as a bed when my sister has been too drunk to get upstairs.

The things that chair has seen...well you can use your imagination.

I don't know what we'd do without the chair. You are most welcome to come and visit it. It is always happy to see new people but be warned...there will be a queue!"

Please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Alexandra Dukes and I live in Cardiff. I am a community librarian working for Caerphilly Library Service. When I am not fighting to get on the chair, you can find me in the gym or down the pub!

What's your story about?
My story is about a chair in our dining room at home which is featured in every photo we take!

Why did you choose this particular story?
The people and dogs who use the chair are very important to me and I wanted to talk to them about them from a different perspective.

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
I enjoyed learning how to make the story and watching everyone else's. I feel confident now to make another.

Your comments

"Love this story! Reminds me of a TV show about a big comfy chair. I once wrote a similar story about a swing. It too saw many things from engagements to kisses and yes, it saw secrets. GREAT story!" Sherrie from U.S.
