I'll do anything for Bangles

By Coyel Banerjee
March 2007, Cardiff
A digital story from Capture Wales

"I'll do anything for bangles. They are my favourite accessories. They are my friend's envy and my pride. My obsession started when I was a teenager. It was delightful to see my mother beautify herself with bangles.

Their tinkling and jingling sound is what excites me the most and I can sit for hours drooling over them. I came to Cardiff last September with a heavy heart, as I had to leave most of my precious collection back home. But as people say something is better than nothing.

My bangles come in different shades and designs. Some are old, some new. People discard broken ones but I treasure them. It's a pity I can't wear them to school everyday but once back home they sit prettily on my hands.

My bangles don't cost a fortune but to me they're worth one. They add a touch of elegance to any women's dainty wrists and can be worn with almost any attire. Whenever I travel, bangles always find a place in my bag.

A couple of months back I had to part with my favourite red bangles. My best friend borrowed them after much coaxing, "Come on Coyel they're not made of gold", "What do you know of my precious bangles", I snapped back.

The worst part was that she did not return them before a month. I was filled with remorse and was extremely annoyed with her. I didn't speak to her for the next three months. The good part was I got them back.

People might call it insanity but I love my bangles they mean the world to me and I can't wait to get back to India to be reunited with my 'WHOLE' collection."

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I hail from the Eastern part of India, from West Bengal. Currently I am pursuing my Masters from Cardiff University. I am an International Journalism student and am throughly enjoying my stay in Cardiff.

What's your story about?
My story is about my obbession with bangles which started as a teenager, when I used to see my mother adorn herself with bangles and since then I feel I have developed an inseperable relationship with my bangles. The reason why I choose to tell this particular story is because I wanted people to see my quirky side, that how a person can show undue attention to mere objects and how true are the words "accessories (and not diamonds, in my case) are a girl's best friend."

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
The best part of the workshop was, all of us got to spend some quality time with our favourite memories, moments and objects/ things, which otherwise is a little difficult in our daily lives.
