Rachel Broome: Life's a Beach

Life's a Beach

By Rachel Broome
July 2005, Newport
A digital story from Shoebox Stories

"Being born and brought up near the Mumbles, I was surrounded by beaches, they were my playground, and I guess as a kid I took that for granted. Now I've moved away and beaches aren't as readily accessible, I appreciate every chance I get to spend time by the sea. I go there to relax and completely unwind. This sculpture is made from some driftwood found near Rhossili. When I look at it, I think of happy times, long bracing walks along the cliff top and races down the steep steps onto the beach. I remember a sunny afternoon spent with my dad and both my grans, strolling along the cliffs before stopping at Thomas's Tea Rooms for an ice cream.

My gran always said that a day at the seaside wasn't complete without an ice cream. Now when I visit the beach, I smell that fresh salty smell, feel the sand between my toes and it instantly brings out the kid in me. I love to clamber around rock pools looking for interesting shells and pebbles. The beach manages to put everything in perspective for me. It evokes so many happy childhood memories and calms and invigorates me at the same time."
