Much-loved bass Robert Lloyd sits on the main prize jury. This is his first visit to the competition.
Robert Lloyd was born in Essex and educated at Oxford University. In 1972 he was appointed principal bass at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he has since sung an enormous range of repertoire.
He has also appeared with the major opera houses throughout the world including Covent Garden, La Scala, Milan; the Deutsche Oper, Berlin; the Opéra National de Paris Bastille; the Netherlands Opera; the Salzburg Festival; the San Francisco Opera; the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and the Chicago Lyric Opera.
Current and future operatic engagements include La Juive for Paris Opéra; Le nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Pelléas et Mélisande, and Don Carlos for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; and L'incoronazione di Poppea for English National Opera.
He has appeared in concert with the Cleveland Orchestra under von Dohnanyi, the Philadelphia Orchestra under Jansons, the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Haitink and most recently the London Symphony Orchestra under Colin Davis.
Robert Lloyd has written and presented a number of radio programmes on opera and the voice for the ´óÏó´«Ã½. He has a vast discography of over 70 audio and video recordings.
In the 1991 New Year's honours list he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE).
