Manure for the vegetable patch!

By Joan Rees, Cwmaman

The Coalhouse episode where the children were filling the trenches in the allotments reminded me of the extra value that the delivery horses gave to the community during the war years - MANURE!

In our street in the 1940s, neighbours were ready with their shovels and buckets to collect that valuable fertiliser for their vegetable plots! Bread, milk, coal deliveries were awaited eagerly.

The folk were ready with their 'tools of the trade' hoping that the horse would 'perform' near their house!
