Dragon's Flame
Martin Collinge, Birmingham
Martin was a student in Aberystwyth in 1984/85.
"I remember shouting 'MAGGIE, MAGGIE, MAGGIE, OUT OUT OUT!' very loudly and literally losing my voice! I remember the camaraderie in the Students' Union as we held a party for the miners, who attended. I remember singing 'Feed The Miners' to the tune of Live Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' which was, of course, number one at that time. I also wrote a poem about the strike. Although it was never published I was/am proud of the poem's first line, 'Silence blows across the landscape'. All in all the strike politicised me and gave me a sense of Wales, its Welshness and the importance of community, leading me to start learning Welsh soon after."
