In recent times it has become a top destination for mountain biking and walking in North Wales but its environment is also home to a wide variety of wildlife.
The forest is managed by the Forestry Commission so is a mixture of commercial planting and conservation areas.
Mammals such as roe and fallow deer, foxes, badgers and dormice all thrive here.
Birds such as black grouse can be seen and heard lekking here in the early spring whilst red kite soar over head.
Insects such as the rare pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly and are also found in the reserve so keep an eye out the ant's impressive mounds in the forests.
