Pine marten
The only recent evidence for pine martens existing in Wales is sightings by members of the public.
The Scottish population appears to be faring relatively well, but in Wales it's a different story. Despite their efforts, the Vincent Wildlife Trust and Snowdonia National Park haven't found any physical evidence (a body or photo) of pine martens in Wales since 1950.
It's been nearly 10 years since they found a scat (faeces) which DNA testing revealed as belonging to a pine marten.
Pine martens have a long fluffy tail, prominent ears and a long face. Their brown fur is a milk chocolate colour in winter and dark chocolate colour in summer with a creamy patch of fur on their chest which looks like a pale bib.
They are larger than stoats and weasels, and have longer tails and legs than polecats.
