Religion under the microscope
The University of Wales at Lampeter might be one of the smallest universities in Europe, but its is among the largest.
Theology has been on the curriculum at Lampeter since the institution began, on the initiative of a bishop of St David's, more than 180 years ago. The teachers of religion back then were priests, and the students were men preparing for the Anglican ministry.
It's very different now, with students of all ages and walks of life, from many parts of the world, arriving to engage in subjects ranging from biblical interpretation, theology and church history to Islamic studies, Celtic Christianity and medical ethics.
In this week's programme (Sunday 11 February at 8.31am, repeated Thursday 15 February at 6.03pm), Roy Jenkins visits the Dept of TRS to hear about the work they do and to explore a more basic question: at a time when fewer people attend church than for many generations, why do so many find the study of religion so fascinating?
