Feel-good fair trade?
Jam, fruit juice, chutney, coffee, biscuits...we're into shopping lists on All Things Considered this week (Sunday 25 February at 8.31am, repeated Thursday 1 March at 6.03pm), as Roy Jenkins and a panel of guests mark the start of Fair Trade Fortnight.
From honey, to tea, oranges, plums, and bananas, the range of products now bearing a label is extensive.
The market has seen rapid growth in the past decade, as shoppers increasingly recognise that their choices could make a life or death difference to some of the world's poorest communities.
How significant is the fair trade phenomenon? Is this a long-term trend, or will it be a passing feel-good phase? Is it reasonable to expect people to pay more to keep their principles in tact?
Joining Roy to discuss these issues are Ian Angell, who hails from the Rhymney Valley and is Professor of Information Systems at the London School of Economics; Liz Perkins, who runs a fair trade shop at Conwy; and Elaine Storkey, President of the relief agency Tear Fund.
