Blessed are you poor?
The words of Jesus in Luke's gospel "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God" must seem scant comfort to anyone wondering where their next meal will come from, or struggling to pay for the children's shoes.
They're also a challenge for any Christian organisation which believes that a commitment to the poorest is a central part of its work. Church Action on Poverty would have to be counted in that number, and it's launched a new initiative, Just Church, which aims to raise involvement with issues of social injustice and poverty in local areas.
In this week's edition of All Things Considered, Roy Jenkins and guests assess some of the problems, and ask how should they be tackled and in what sense are churches the right bodies to be to dealing with them?
