Congo / St David

The harps have been played, the toasts proposed, and considerable quantities eaten and drunk in his honour - but how much do we really know about the patron saint of Wales?

On All Things Considered this week (Sunday 2 March at 8.31am, repeated on Wednesday 5 March at 6.30pm) Roy Jenkins and a panel of guests explore whether the real St David is lost in the mists of the sixth century - and what his story actually means in contemporary Wales.

He would probably not have been too impressed at being named this week on the shortlist of 10 drawn up to find the national idol, along with such figures as Tom Jones, Joe Calzaghe and Ryan Giggs.

As a robust Christian of his day, he would have been rather more interested in smashing idols. But what place does he have in contemporary Wales?

Also in the programme we meet Gill and Kevin Jones who left their home in Tywyn in Gwynedd to travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they work as Baptist missionaries.

It's a country which rarely makes the headlines, but five years of civil conflict cost at least three million lives before a fragile peace was declared in 2003. It's been one of Africa's biggest, but least recognised, humanitarian crises.
