All Things Considered: Faith Schools / Music in the Community

Faith Schools / Music in the Community

This week's "All Things Considered" (Sunday 7 September at 8.30am, repeated Wednesday 10 September at 6.30pm) looks at faith schools and also "Music in the Community".

A new school year has begun, and with it a fresh debate on the place of faith schools. A new coalition is urging the government to insist that they no longer discriminate against pupils and teachers on religious grounds, and give a clear commitment to inclusive, community-wide education.

Involving a teaching union, humanists, and a number of religious groups, the coalition, Accord, wants fairer admissions policies and equal employment rights for staff, regardless of their beliefs. But are their criticisms reasonable? Do faith schools practise a discrimination which is a threat to an inclusive society? Or are they important elements in creating such a society? Roy Jenkins and a panel of guests discuss the issues.

Also, Roy hears about an unusual pilgrimage to Canterbury from the Rhondda Valley on 13th September which marks the tenth anniversary of the Music in the Community scheme founded by the vicar of Ynyshir, Fr. Paul Bigmore.
