George Herbert and The Earl of Powis
This week's "All Things Considered" (Sunday 21 September at 8.30am, repeated Wednesday 24 September at 6.30pm) looks at the life of George Herbert, the Welsh born poet priest, who has been described as "one of the greatest lyric poets to have written in English".
Some of his work was later arranged into hymns which remain in use to this day, such as the well loved "Let all the world in every corner sing", "King of Glory, King of Peace", and "Come my way, my truth, my life".
At the end of September, 375 years after his death, the historic market town of Montgomery hosts a festival in his honour. To mark the occasion Roy Jenkins visits Powis Castle to talk to the poet's direct descendant, the present Earl of Powis, John George Herbert, who shares a similarity to some of the spiritual struggles experienced by his ancestor.
