Wynford Ellis Owen on Addiction
The guest in "All Things Considered" this week (Sunday 19 October, 8.30am, repeated Wednesday 22 Oct, 6.30pm) is a man who, in his own words, has been to hell and back again.
Wynford Ellis Owen is one of the most familiar figures in Welsh language drama. In 40 years as a stage and television actor, he's done just about everything, from Shakespeare to the children's favourite Syr Wynff in Teliffant, to the long running comedy series Porc Peis Bach. He's a dramatist, scriptwriter and director.
For most of his life, he was also addicted to alcohol and prescription drugs; and that gives him a unique insight in the job he took up at the beginning of this month. As the new Chief Executive of the Welsh Council for Alcohol and Other Drugs, a body sponsored by the churches, he's well able to reflect on the relationship between addiction and faith.
In this interview with Roy Jenkins he talks candidly about his life as an addict which began when he was a child, the "Road to Damascus" experience that changed him and the hopes he has for raising awareness of the problems in Wales.
