All Things Considered: Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Archbishop Desmond Tutu
On 'All Things Considered' this week (Sunday 31 May at 8.30am, repeated on Wednesday 3 June at 6.30pm), Roy Jenkins' guest is one of the best-known figures in the Christian church today.
Nobel Peace Prize winner, unashamed controversialist, and man of prayer, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is in Wales for the Hay Festival.
Once labelled South Africa's 'public enemy number one', he continues to speak out against injustice, and has not shied away from rebuking his country's post-apartheid leaders.
Desmond Tutu is also a figure of global significance. As chairman of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission he sometimes wept openly as victims told their stories, and his experience there is inspirational in the aftermath of other long-standing conflicts.
Along with people of the stature of Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter and Kofi Annan, he is also one of 'The Elders', a group of distinguished figures contributing wisdom to some of the world's toughest problems.
