All Things Considered - Unlocking Church Doors

Unlocking Church Doors

"A locked church is a contradiction in terms."

So said, the Very Revd Geoffrey Marshall in his sermon on the occasion of his Installation as Dean of Brecon Cathedral last year. He's one of Roy Jenkins' guests on All Things Considered this week (Sunday 5 July at 8.30am, repeated Wednesday 8 July at 6.30pm).

There are many fine church buildings throughout Wales, but try the door and you might find it firmly locked, apart that is from an hour or so on Sundays. During the rest of the week it's impenetrable, both to vandals, and to would-be worshippers.

This week we visit three churches (in Gresford, Llandegai and Bangor) who are determined to keep their doors unlocked. For some it's a basic matter of making sure that the building is always open, always accessible. For others it's about re-establishing a central place in community life.
